PORT TOWNSEND — A Chimacum man was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Sunday after he overshot the ramp of a vehicle jump and landed hard, witnesses said.
Austin Bishop, 18, was driving an orange Ford F-150 during the Tough Truck competition on the final day of the 13th annual Jeffco Expo at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds when the incident happened at the end of the course, witnesses said.
The truck never left the course or crashed, and the driver walked away from his vehicle, said Ted Krysinski, East Jefferson Fire-Rescue duty chief.
He was belted and wearing a helmet but apparently was hurt when he was thrown around in the cab as the truck landed roughly, Krysinski said.
“He passed out and was treated for a head-related injury,” he said.
Bishop was taken by ambulance to nearby baseball fields before being transferred to an Air Lift Northwest helicopter for transport to Harborview.
Harborview officials did not return calls for information on Bishop’s condition Sunday afternoon.
Proceeds from the Jeffco Expo support fairgrounds maintenance and repairs prior to the county fair, which will mark its 75th anniversary in August.
