CHIMACUM — A math video created by four Chimacum Middle School girls was selected as one of 20 to be considered for national honors.
The team of sixth-grade students — Esther Perrott, Renee Woods, Kaitlyn Ejde and Erin Crouch — is among the semifinalists in the MathCounts Reel Math Challenge, a contest for middle school students to create a video that illustrates a real-world math problem.
Their video, “Fundraiser in a Cup,” features the four students’ use of math to figure out how much to charge to make a profit on a custom coffee-bean blend that would be sold as a fundraiser.
The video garnered 2,921 votes in an online portion of the contest, which allowed Internet users to select their favorite video. The video can be seen at www.tinyurl.com/ahyrtgn.
Videos that earned a spot in the semifinals are being reviewed by the MathCounts judges, and four finalists will be flown to Washington, D.C.
The four finalists will be announced Thursday.
Judges will make their decisions based on the quality of the video and the students’ clarity in explaining the math concept.
Finals May 9
If the Chimacum video is one of four selected, the students, with their adviser and math teacher, Deborah Berreth, will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the May 9 MathCounts finals in Washington, D.C.
There, the top four videos will be judged by 224 students competing in the MathCounts National Competition, which is not part of the Reel Math Challenge.
All student members of teams that reach the finals of the Reel Math Challenge will receive Droid DNA smartphones.
Each of the four members of the team that created the winning video will receive a $1,000 college scholarship.
