PORT TOWNSEND –– A Chimacum man who allegedly fled the scene of a rollover crash on Cape George Road has been booked into Jefferson County jail.

Kevin Campbell, 30, was arrested Sunday for investigation of driving under the influence, said Jefferson County Sheriff’s Detective Bret Anglin.

Vehicle rolled onto roof

Campbell, the only person in the vehicle, drove off the road near Discovery Bay Golf Course, and his vehicle rolled onto its roof at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday, according to an East Jefferson Fire-Rescue press release.

Golfers then helped Campbell out of the vehicle, Anglin said.

“He surprised them by taking off running,” he said.

Law enforcement then began searching driveways and a brushy area where the driver was believed to have last been seen.

Trying to flag down a ride

During the search, a motorist reported passing a man northbound on Cape George Road who was attempting to flag down a ride, the press release stated. Law enforcement responded and returned Campbell to the scene of the accident. He was evaluated by an aid unit and taken into custody.

Traffic on the south end of Cape George Road was closed for approximately 30 minutes.
