PORT TOWNSEND – When he was 4 years old, Mateo Denali was at Learning Playcare preschool in Port Townsend when the teacher brought in a new student.
She introduced the serious-looking boy as Miles, and asked, “Does anybody want to be his friend?”
“Nobody raised their hand, so I raised my hand,” Mateo says.
Since that day, Mateo Denali and Miles Okazaki have been friends – through grade school and high school, even keeping in touch when Mateo left to live with his father in Maine and Miles went off to Harvard.
Now, both are both professional musicians who will take their friendship to another level by performing their music together on their home ground this week.
“We always wanted to play together,” Mateo says.
