Child rape case nets 12-year prison term for 21-year-old Port Angeles man

PORT ANGELES — A 21-year-old Port Angeles man has been sentenced to more than 12 years in state prison for child molestation, child rape and possessing child porn.

John Holly Whitman was sentenced Tuesday to 146 months after pleading guilty Dec. 7 to single counts of first-degree child molestation, second-degree child rape and first-degree possession of depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Twenty-six other charges were dismissed as part of a plea agreement, according to Clallam County Superior Court records.

Port Angeles police accused Whitman in January 2014 of having sex with two preteen girls when he was 17 and possessing images of children as young as 6 in sexual situations.

Whitman told investigators that he had had sex with two girls, one when she was 11 and the other when she was 12, and communicated with one of the victims about their encounters on Facebook, according to court documents.

The original charges included multiple counts of child rape, child molestation, possessing child pornography and communicating with minors for immoral purposes.

Whitman will be subject to state Department of Corrections supervision and sex offender registration and was ordered to have no contact with the victims for life, according to the minutes of the sentencing hearing.

Whitman was being held Friday at the Washington State Corrections Center near Shelton.
