Charges pending for pair arrested in alleged heroin bust

PORT ANGELES — Two Port Angeles residents are expected to be charged in Clallam County Superior Court this week with heroin-related offenses after they were arrested last weekend.

On Saturday, Port Angeles police arrested Adam Dartagnan Clevenger, 26, and Cree Nichole Stone, 22, at a house in the 800 block of West 12th Street after initially being called to the house on the report of an unconscious woman thought to be suffering from a heroin overdose.

Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith said police recovered 6.5 grams of a substance suspected to be black-tar heroin from the home.

Jason Viada, detective sergeant with the police and supervisor of the Peninsulawide Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team, estimated 6.5 grams of heroin would have a street value of about $1,300.

Smith said a 4-year-old child was taken from the home by police and put into the custody of state Child Protective Services.

The woman, transported to Olympic Medical Center on Saturday, later told officers she had been using heroin at the 12th Street home, according to police accounts.

The woman had been treated and discharged from Olympic Medical Center as of Wednesday, hospital marketing manager Jeff Anderson said.

Clevenger was booked into the Clallam County jail for investigation of delivery of a controlled substance, while Stone was booked on possession of a controlled substance. Both also had prior arrest warrants.

Clevenger is expected to be charged in Clallam County Superior Court at 3 p.m. today, while charges are expected to be filed against Stone at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Both remained in the Clallam County jail Wednesday, Stone with no bail set and Clevenger on $15,350 bail and in lieu of $7,500 bond.

Smith said Wednesday a neighbor had called 9-1-1 emergency dispatchers at about 11 a.m. Saturday to report a woman slumped down on the porch of the 12th Street home.

Smith said the Saturday call was at least the seventh suspected or confirmed heroin overdose that Port Angeles police and emergency crews have responded to so far this month.

One of the seven overdoses is thought to have resulted in the death of 17-year-old Maceo Niehaus of Port Angeles, found dead May 14 at a home in the 700 block of South Ennis Street.

David Zavodny, 18, has been charged with maintaining premises for drug trafficking at the Ennis Street home after allegedly providing Niehaus with the heroin that reportedly contributed to Niehaus’ death.

Law enforcement officials across the Peninsula have noted an increase in the prevalence of heroin in communities over the past two years.

The police arrest report filed in Clallam County Superior Court in the case involving Clevenger and Stone gave this account:

Officers obtained a search warrant for the 12th Street home after arresting Clevenger and Stone on existing warrants.

After being read her rights, Stone told officers she had used heroin with Clevenger in her room at the home and further said Clevenger gives her money and heroin.

Stone said Clevenger gets the drugs from Bremerton.

After a search of the home, officers found prescription medication, suspected heroin, electronic scales, unused small plastic bags and unused syringes.

Clevenger was arrested with more than $3,000 on him, while more than $1,100 was found in Stone’s purse, police said.

Stone later told another officer that Clevenger had brought most of the drug paraphernalia into the house, police said.

Smith said the arrests and the drugs and paraphernalia found in the home are important, if not particularly unique, adding that the case is an example of residents being aware of their neighborhoods and calling 9-1-1.

“One of the best things people in the community can do is call us in real time when they see what they think to be drug activity,” Smith said.
