‘Chain’ moves books to library’s new locale

PORT TOWNSEND—An estimated two hundred people formed a “people chain” Monday afternoon, commemorating the move of the Port Townsend Library to a temporary location for several months while repairs and upgrades are conducted on the main building.

“Look at all the people!” said Library Director Theresa Percy.

“This is really great.”

The chain began at 1220 Lawrence Street and traveled a little more than a mile to Mountain View Commons, which will serve as the library for an undetermined time but most likely throughout 2012, Percy said.

The chain was not solid during the entire route, so some participants had to run or walk several feet to get to the next person.

Percy said that 20 books, including a dictionary and a Dewey Decimal guide, were passed down the chain.

The additional holdings, about 20,000 volumes, will be transported this week by professional library movers, Star Moving of Tacoma.

The library is scheduled to open in its new location on April 16.

The weather was perfect, the people were enthusiastic, and participants ranged from senior citizens to preschoolers.

“We love the library,” said Anna Oswald of Port Townsend.

“My daughter Emma was coming to the library from the time she began, so it seemed right that we were here to support the library in its move.”

“It was a success,” said Susan Hargleroad,

“People came here, they did their job and the word was out.”
