Chain Gang busy with roadside litter, illegal dumpsite cleanup

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Chain Gang picked up 190 pounds of roadside litter from 8 miles of O’Brien Road, 50 pounds of roadside litter from 2 miles of Happy Valley Road, 150 pounds of roadside litter from 1 mile of River Road, 75 pounds of roadside litter from 6 miles of Dan Kelly Road, 25 pounds of roadside litter from 2 miles of Place Road, 80 pounds of roadside litter from 1 mile of state Highway 112 and 200 pounds of roadside litter from 3 miles of the Tumwater Truck Route during the week of Feb. 24-28.

Notable items found along the roadways include three couches, tires, a wood-burning stove and a washing machine.

Crew members also picked up 150 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite along Runnion Road, 450 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite along Happy Valley Road, 15o pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite along River Road, 75 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite at the Colville Trailhead, 25 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite at the Elwha Interpretative Center, 500 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite at the Peabody Creek campsite, 100 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite along state Highway 112 and 800 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite along the Tumwater Truck Route.

Crew members assisted the county Roads Division by brushing and chipping on Elizabeth Lane, Kellie Court, Eagle Place and Alderwood Lane.

Crew members also repaired dump-truck damage to a driveway on Billy Smith Road.

Crew members removed storm debris from Fresh Water Bay, Freshwater Park, Eden Valley, Gossett, Fisher’s Cove and Dan Kelly roads.

Crew members removed a hazard tree from Mount Pleasant Road.

Crew members shoveled around guard rails on Monroe Road.

Crew members also brushed along Old Camp Hayden and Fisher’s Cove roads.

So far this year, the chain gang has cleaned 151.3 miles of roadway, picked up 7,635 pounds of roadside litter, picked up 12,615 pounds of illegal dumpsite litter and shoveled or trimmed weeds from 1,221 feet of guardrails.
