Chain Gang busy with area cleanups

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Chain Gang picked up 200 pounds of roadside litter from 5 miles of Dan Kelly Road, 200 pounds of roadside litter from 2 miles of state Highway 112, 200 pounds of roadside litter from 2 miles of state Highway 110 and 460 pounds of roadside litter from 8 miles of Old Olympic Highway during the week of Feb. 3-7.

Crew members also picked up 100 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite at the Sappho Park and Ride, and 80 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite at the Deer Park Rest Area.

Crew members assisted the county Roads Division by cleaning curbs on Front Street in Sekiu.

Crew members also cleaned up storm debris on Camp Hayden Road.

Crew members cleaned out culverts and ditches on Eden Valley, Dan Kelly, Gagnon and Wasankari roads.

Crew members removed downed trees and storm debris from Mary Clark, Pavel, East Lake Pleasant, West Lake Pleasant, Quilleute, Whitcomb-Dimmel roads and Bogachiel Way.

Crew members also filled and placed 40 sandbags at the Dean Creek bridge on the Olympic Discovery Trail.

During the week of Feb. 10-14 crew members picked up 200 pounds of roadside litter from 3 miles of Monroe Road, 100 pounds of roadside litter from ½ mile of Karpen Road, 150 pounds of roadside litter from 1.5 miles of Elwha River Road, 50 pounds of roadside litter from 1 mile of Sisson Road and 300 pounds of roadside litter from 3 miles of Crescent Beach Road.

Notable items found along the roadways include 17 tires.

Crew members assisted the county Roads Division by clearing a landslide from the roadway of Freshwater Bay Road.

Crew members also cleaned out culverts and cleaned up storm debris from Deer Park and Palo Alto roads.

Crew members excavated and repaired a buried concrete culvert at the “Dawley Slump” on the Olympic Discovery Trail.

Crew members also cut brush along the sides of Karpen and Monroe roads.

So far this year, the chain gang has cleaned 102.3 miles of roadway, picked up 5,225 pounds of roadside litter and picked up 10,245 pounds of illegal dumpsite litter.
