Chain gang busy on county roads

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Chain Gang picked up 500 pounds of roadside litter from 3 miles of west 18th Street, 260 pounds of roadside litter from 4 miles of Elwha River Road, 300 pounds of roadside litter from 4 miles of Gasman Road and 100 pounds of roadside litter from Sequim-Dungeness Road during the week of March 9-13.

Notable items found along the roadways include 30 tires and a headstone in Lee’s Creek.

Crew members also picked up 3,860 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Joyce Access Road, 100 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Elwha River Road, 200 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Granite Road and 1,200 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite at Lee’s Creek.

Crew members assisted the county Roads Division by cleaning Trout Bridge and Swan Bay on Hoko-Ozette Road.

Crew members also cleaned Maxwell Bridge and dug ditches for down spouts.

Crew members removed vegetation from stock piles and pulled 600 Scotch broom plants from the Quileute Road Pit.

Crew members assisted the U.S. Forest Service with site maintenance at Klahowya Campground by filling potholes, spreading gravel in parking areas and campsites and cleaning storm debris from the roads.

Crew members shoveled around guard rails on Monroe Road.

Crew members also brushed along Old Camp Hayden and Fisher’s Cove roads.

So far this year, the chain gang has cleaned 182.3 miles of roadway, picked up 10,080 pounds of roadside litter, picked up 19,890 pounds of illegal dumpsite litter, shoveled or trimmed weeds from 1,221 feet of guardrails and removed or sprayed 600 Scotch broom plants.
