PORT ANGELES — Two Clallam County law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty will be among the fallen officers who will be honored with a ceremony at 1:30 p.m. today.
The annual ceremony will be at Liberty Park, adjacent to the Clallam County Courthouse on Lincoln Street.
It will include an announcement of names of those who died in the state during the past year, a 21-gun salute and an honor guard.
Clallam County Sheriff’s Deputy Wally Davis was killed in the line of duty in August 2000. Forest Service Officer Kristine Fairbanks was killed in September 2008.
“It makes it humbling, for all of the people who came before us,” said Ron Cameron, chief criminal deputy of the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.
“We think about them all the time, especially Wally and Chris,” Cameron said.
Clallam County sheriff’s deputies, Port Angeles and Sequim police, Olympic National Park rangers, U.S. Border Patrol personnel, Coast Guard members and State Patrol troopers are expected to attend the half-hour ceremony on Lincoln Street.
National Law Enforcement Memorial Week is held each year on the second full week in May.
On Tuesday, Clallam County commissioners approved a proclamation recognizing Thursday as National Peace Officers Memorial Day.
A commissioner will read the proclamation at the ceremony.
“Everything that could be said is in the proclamation,” Cameron said.
