Ceremony to honor Vietnam veterans on Monday

PORT ANGELES — A Vietnam War Veteran Commemoration Ceremony is planned at the Clallam County Veteran Center at 2 p.m. Monday.

The ceremony will be held outdoors at the center at 216 S Francis Street in Port Angeles. Face masks and social distancing will be required.

The guest speaker will be the Sheriff Bill Benedict, a retired Navy commander.

The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 established March 29 as the annual national day to recognize the patriotism of Vietnam veterans.

The Michael Trebert Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution in Port Angeles, an official commemorative partner of this program, is working with Clallam County Veterans Association to hold the ceremony this year.

The ceremony will honor all Vietnam veterans who served on active duty between Nov. 1, 1955 and May 15, 1975, regardless of location.

Also honored will be surviving spouses and their families. Each will receive a certificate and special lapel pin.

American Legion Post 29 will provide a flag line. Amanda Lynn Bacon will perform the National Anthem.

A rifle salute and the playing of taps also are planned. American Legion Riders will perform the flag folding and Rickey McKenzie, who is retired from the Coast Guard, will play Amazing Grace on the bagpipes.

To reserve a pin, contact Ginny Wagner, Commemorative Partner co-chair, Michael Trebert Chapter, NSDAR at 360-582-6820 or vgwagnermtc.dar@gmail.com.

“Please join our nation to thank and honor veterans of the Vietnam War, including prisoners of war or missing in action, for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States and to thank and honor the families of these veterans,” organizers said in a press release.
