Centennial of flight provides fun summertime reading for North Olympic Peninsula kids

The story of the first flight of Orville and Wilbur Wright a century ago is being told during the next seven weeks to promote youth literacy in Clallam and Jefferson counties.

Peninsula Daily News publishes a special supplement today in which kids can paste chapters of “Dreams Come True: The Story of the First Flight” to create a book.

The first chapter in the true-life saga begins today on Page A6.

Then each Tuesday and Thursday through Aug. 21, another chapter of the story will be published exclusively in the PDN.

14-chapter book

Youths across the Peninsula are encouraged to read and clip out each chapter and place it in the supplement to create a 14-chapter book, said Julie Speelman, the PDN’s Newspapers in Education coordinator and a member of the Clallam County Literacy Council.

“We wanted to promote literacy through some kind of summer reading program,” said Speelman, who is also circulation, sales and promotions manager.

“Since it is the 100th anniversary of the first flight, the story seemed appropriate.”

For children in Port Angeles and Sequim who are too young to read at the middle-school level, the stories will be read aloud on the same day they appear in the newspaper at 1:50 p.m. on radio KONP 1450 AM.

Literacy council members and other volunteers will be doing the reading during the Todd Ortloff talk show.

Reading prizes

Speelman said to reward children for reading prizes will be awarded — including a scenic flight over the Peninsula donated by Rite Brothers Aviation of Port Angeles and a $100 U.S. Savings Bond donated by the Peninsula Daily News.

To be eligible for the prizes, the young readers must answer a few questions about each chapter by filling out an entry form published next to each chapter.

A drawing will be held Aug. 28, and winners will be notified by mail.

A ceremony will be held Sept. 6 to recognize children who read all chapters and answered questions on all 14 entry forms, Speelman said.

Reading Award Excellence Certificates will be given to readers along with a “goodie bag” featuring donated items from Peninsula businesses, she said.

The time and location of the ceremony and open house will be announced later.

Speelman said readers can submit entry forms and get additional copies of the free special supplement at the following sponsor locations:

They include Port Townsend Airport Days on July 19-20, Forks Fly-In on July 26, Diamond Point Airport Day on Aug. 9, and Port Angeles Airport Day on Sept. 6.

Through advertising sponsorships of the supplement, the Clallam and the Jefferson counties literacy councils received $140 each to purchase books for area children, Speelman said.
