OLYMPIA – Clallam County shelter providers will lobby legislators today with Point in Time census numbers that show a significant drop in homelessness since 2006.
Jefferson County housing advocates also will visit Olympia, but aren’t sure yet what their census will show.
Preliminary results from last Thursday’s count of homeless people in Clallam County totaled 784 but did not include reports from Forks.
Some of the drop from last year’s total of 1,055 could be due to recent severe winter weather on the North Olympic Peninsula, said Kathy Wahto, executive director of Serenity House and census supervisor.
Cold temperatures may have kept some homeless individuals inside and out of a census taker’s view or have driven others to warmer locations.
Still, the preliminary total was less than three-quarters of the 2006 sum of homeless men, women and children.
