PORT ANGELES — A proposal to build a crematory in Carlsborg met opposition from about a dozen possible neighbors Wednesday at a Clallam County land-use hearing.
They represented only about 5 percent of the people who have signed petitions at nearby businesses protesting the facility and the odors they fear it might omit.
However, Jason Linde promised, “My crematory will be odorless. I will not operate a crematory with offensive smells.”
The proceedings in front of county Hearing Examiner Chris Melly were on Linde’s request for a conditional use permit to install the crematory at 110 Business Park Loop.
Melly will present his written ruling within 10 days. It can be appealed to county commissioners and, from them, to Superior Court.
Crematories are not listed under any section of the county zoning code, although several crematories operate in Forks, Port Angeles and Sequim.
The county planning staff said Melly had authority to make it a conditional use.
