Cape Flattery school bond election ends today

Ballots in the Cape Flattery School District’s all-mail bond issue election must be postmarked today or taken to the Clallam County Courthouse by 8 p.m.

Voters in the district are deciding whether to approve a $3.5 million bond to upgrade gymnasiums on both the Clallam Bay and Neah Bay campuses and combine portable classrooms at Clallam Bay Elementary, among other projects.

A total of 379 – or 35.9 percent – of the 1,054 ballots mailed about three weeks ago have been received by the Clallam County Auditor’s Office in Port Angeles as of Friday.

“The primary reason for submitting this proposal to the public is the district is no longer able to creatively fund capital facilities improvements,” Superintendent Gene Laes said.

If the bond is approved, property owners will pay an estimated $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, Laes said.

A supermajority of 60 percent voter approval is needed to approve the bond issue.

If voters approve the bond, the district anticipates between $800,000 and $1 million in state matching funds, which could be received in mid-2008 and would have the effect of lowering the tax rate, Laes said.

“The elementary school and both gyms have significant health and safety issues, and all are out of compliance with American with Disabilities Act standards,” Laes said.

Ballots must be mailed in time to be postmarked today, or taken to the Auditor’s Office in the county courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles, before 8 p.m.
