Candidate filing quiets down in Jefferson

Monday’s busy first day of candidate filings for Jefferson County’s fall elections was followed Tuesday by a quiet one during which only one candidate submitted papers.

Incumbent Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney Juelie Dalzell filed for re-election as a Democrat in the partisan election.

There has been no announced opponent for Dalzell.

A total of 12 candidates filed at the county auditor’s office on Monday, the first day of the five-day filing period for the primary election Sept. 19 and general election Nov. 7.

Van De Wege files

On the state level, Sequim firefighter Kevin Van De Wege filed Tuesday for the Democratic nomination for 24th District state representative.

The district includes Jefferson and Clallam counties.

Van De Wege is expected to face Republican incumbent Jim Buck of Joyce in the general election in a repeat of their race in 2004.

Buck filed for re-election on Monday.

In the U.S. Senate party primaries, five people joined the race Tuesday.

The additional challengers are perennial Democratic candidate Mike the Mover of Edmonds; Green Party candidate Aaron Dixon of Seattle; the expected Republican nominee Mike McGavick of Seattle; Democrat Hong Tran of Seattle; and independent candidate Robin Adair of Seattle.

The incumbent, Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Mountlake Terrace, still hadn’t officially filed as of early Tuesday evening.

Like in all the other offices, candidates have until Friday at 4:30 p.m. to file papers and pay fees.

Candidates for state and federal offices must file with the secretary of state’s office in Olympia or online at www.secstate.wa.gov/elections.

A real-time list of candidates in state, judicial and federal races can also be found at the secretary of state’s Web site.

For a real-time list of candidates who have filed for Jefferson County offices — and for filing information at the county courthouse in Port Townsend — go to www.co.jefferson.wa.us /auditor/Elections/Elections.asp.
