Cancer commission cites Sequim center

SEQUIM — The Olympic Medical Cancer Center has received a three-year approval “with commendation” from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

The commission honored the cancer center for compliance with standards that include cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach and quality improvement.

Deby King, the center’s interim director, cited the “multi-disciplinary approach to cancer treatment” at what also is known as the Thomas Family Cancer Center.

Components include radiation and medical oncology, pharmacy, nutrition, education and support and the patient navigator who help patients concentrate on fighting their illnesses.

The center program gives patients access to:

  • Comprehensive care.

  • A multi-specialty, team-based approach to treatment.

  • Information about clinical trials and new treatment options.

  • Cancer-related information, education and support.

  • A registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatments and offers life-long patient follow up.

Cancer patient data is reported by each Commission on Cancer-approved center to the commission’s National Cancer database, a cooperative program between the commission and the American Cancer Society.

The database contains patient demographics, tumor characteristics and treatment and outcome information for more than 18 million cancer patients diagnosed and treated at hospital cancer programs in the United States.

Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the Commission on Cancer is a consortium of 42 professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients.
