California woman hurt in collision on Highway 104

QUILCENE — A California woman remained in satisfactory condition Tuesday afternoon at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after she was hurt in a two-vehicle collision near Sandy Shore Road on a freshly snow-covered state Highway 104.

Karen S. Smith, 45, who lives in Scotts Valley, Calif., was airlifted to Harborview with unspecified injuries after the 1:15 p.m. Monday wreck. None of the others involved in the collision were injured, according to the State Patrol.

The State Patrol said the cause of the wreck was speed too fast for conditions.

Smith was a passenger in the car driven by Shelley Kristine Shamp, 50, of Port Angeles. Shamp was traveling eastbound on state Highway 104 when the car struck a new layer of snow and spun into the oncoming lane, the State Patrol said.

It was struck by a car driven by Ashley G. Rizan, 36, of Port Angeles, who was traveling westbound on the highway. Both cars ended up in the westbound ditch, troopers said.

Jana F. Didrickson, 77, of Port Angeles was a passenger in Shamp’s car. Zoe Rizan, 5, hometown unavailable, was a passenger in Rizan’s car.

All wore seatbelts, troopers said. Neither drugs nor alcohol were involved, they said.

Both vehicles were destroyed, according to the State Patrol.
