Sports license plates

OLYMPIA — Specialized license plates for Seattle Seahawks and Sounders fans went on sale last week, and football fans were especially eager.

The state Department of Licensing said 1,810 Seahawks plates had been issued by about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, along with 148 Sounders plates.

The plates feature the 12th Man flag for the Seahawks and a team scarf for Sounders FC.

Licensing officials said demand will determine how many plates will be made.

Proceeds will benefit three nonprofit groups.

Tax return processing delayed to Jan. 31

WASHINGTON —The Internal Revenue Service said it will begin processing 2013 tax returns on Jan. 31, 10 days later than it had originally planned, due to delays caused by the 16-day partial government shutdown this fall.

The opening date for the 2014 tax season is one day later than last year’s opening, which was late due to Congressional tax law changes in January, the IRS said in a news release.

The IRS noted that year-end tax planning information has been added to IRS.gov.

It encouraged taxpayers to use e-file or Free File as the fastest way to receive refunds.

It said that many software companies are expected to begin accepting tax returns in January and hold those returns until the IRS systems open on Jan. 31.
