SEQUIM — Sequim Health and Rehabilitation has been recognized by its parent company for being its “best of the best” nursing center in the region.

Extendicare Health Services Inc. presented its 2013 Cornerstone Award to the care center at 650 W. Hemlock St. earlier this month at a reception featuring Extendicare area vice president Jared Elliot, Sequim Health and Rehabilitation administrator Edward Ebling and nursing director Christy Resser.

Criteria for the award include responsiveness, integrity, compassion, dignity, pride and respect — Extendicare’s “six cornerstones — as shown by management and staff.

Appreciation event

SEQUIM — Hardy’s Market, 10200 Old Olympic Highway, will host a customer appreciation barbecue at 11 a.m. Saturday.

There will be free hamburgers and hot dogs, plus $2 ice cream and free prizes.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6787 will be present.

Doctor joins team

SEQUIM — Dr. William Hobbs will join Drs. Samantha Reiter, Roger Olsen and Charles Sullivan at Sequim Medical Associates starting Sept. 4.

Hobbs is board-certified in internal medicine and has provided medical care in the community for more than 10 years.

He is accepting new and previous patients, and is credentialed with all major insurance companies.

Director appointed

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula Friends of Animals, 257509 U.S. Highway 101, has selected Danette Grady as its first executive director.

Grady was previously the public relations director for Living Free Animal Sanctuary in Mountain Center, Calif., where she was employed for 18 years.

Midweek market

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Farmers Market has opened its midweek summer market at The Gateway pavilion, Front and Lincoln streets.

The market will be open from 10 a.m. 2 p.m. Wednesdays.

“Our farmers do a fantastic job of furnishing our community with fresh, local produce all year round,” said Cynthia Warne, market manager.

“During the summer months, they have an abundance of summer fruits and vegetables, enough to stock a second weekly market until the end of August.

“Summer favorites like tomatoes, squash, lettuce, green beans and berries will be readily available at this midweek market,” she said, “and we encourage folks who work in the downtown area to come down on their lunch break or any other time to do a little shopping and stock up on this great assortment of fresh, local food.”

SEQUIM — The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce and Terrific-Transitions are offering several “New to Town” conversations to those who have recently moved to Sequim or who are considering it.

During conversations, attendees will learn how to connect with locals, find out the history of Sequim, learn of volunteer opportunities and more.

Conversations are slated to take place at First Federal, 333 N. Sequim Ave., from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. this coming Wednesday plus Aug. 27 and Oct. 22.

Fundraising results

SEQUIM — Sequim Philanthropic Educational Organization Chapter FY recently held its annual fundraising tea at Nourish restaurant.

From raffles and a silent auction, more than $1,300 was raised.

These funds are used to provide educational scholarships for deserving women, according to a news release.

In the second segment, Dennis Tilton, board chair of Clallam County Amateur Radio Club, and Bruce Reiter, public information officer for Amateur Radio Emergency Services, discuss their upcoming annual Amateur Radio Field Day.

■ Thursday: In the first segment, Shelley Taylor and Cathy Lucero discuss a countywide emphasis on scotch broom removal.

In the second segment, Trudy Teter discusses the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Home Ownership Month.
