PORT ANGELES — A suspected burglar who was on the run for more than a week was arrested Monday morning after authorities discovered him hiding inside a couch, Port Angeles police said.
Clifford E. Hanning, 25, of Port Angeles and Sequim, had allegedly broken into a Port Angeles home in the 600 block of West Eighth St. on June 24 while wielding a crowbar before surprising the woman who lived there and fleeing on foot, Port Angeles police said.
He was arrested Monday on investigation of residential burglary and malicious mischief after a tip that was received by the Sequim Police Department led Port Angeles police to a home in the 800 block of East Fifth Street, Deputy Chief Brian Smith said.
Hanning was found in the home, hiding inside a storage compartment of a couch, underneath the cushions, police said.
“He appeared to be aware of our presence,” Smith said.
A neighbor may have mistakenly tipped off Hanning that authorities — three detectives and three police officers — were outside the house, Smith said.
There was no immediate indication that an occupant of the home, who let police inside, knowingly hid Hanning from authorities, Smith said.
Nothing was stolen during the June 24 burglary, Smith added.
