PORT ANGELES — Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue crews contained a brush fire that burned about 1.5 acres south of U.S. Highway 101 near Deer Park Loop Road.

No injuries were reported.

The fire was reported at 11:18 a.m. Monday and firefighters arrived to find a 50-foot by 100-foot grass fire burning on the south side of the highway.

“The fire was moving slowly but steadily in all directions and some larger Scotch broom bushes were infighting,” the fire district stated in a press release.

The fire was quickly knocked down and mopped up using about 2,600 gallons of water, according to the press release.

Crews contacted an on-scene worker from the state Department of Transportation who reported he was mowing brush in the field area and hit a large rock, which caused a spark.

“This started the dry grass on fire and it spread quickly,” the fire district said in the release.

Firefighters deployed hose lines around the perimeter of the fire to contain the spread. Several fire and WSDOT vehicles were parked along the eastbound shoulder and a wildland engine was positioned along Deer Park Loop Road, the release said.

WSDOT temporarily blocked all eastbound traffic so firefighters could clear the scene. The fire was located on a blind corner around Morse Creek, the release said.

Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue responded with two command vehicles, one structural engine, one wildland engine and one water tender with a total of 11 personnel. WSDOT and the Washington State Patrol also responded.
