BRINNON — The U.S. Forest Service has withdrawn, at least for the present time, its decision to rebuild Dosewallips Road around a two-year-old washout.
The agency originally said March 23 that it would rebuild the 300-foot washout 10 miles west of U.S. Highway 101.
In the days that followed, two appeals were lodged against the rebuilding project.
The Tuesday afternoon decision to stop the project was not in reaction to the appeals filed against it, Hood Canal District Ranger David Craig said.
In fact, another decision to rebuild the road may be on the horizon.
But first “we need to improve our documentation,” Craig said.
“We’re taking what we have now, improving on it, building on it, and then we’re going to get public comment on it.”
After reviewing the documents supporting the project, Olympic National Forest Supervisor David Hom decided more review of the plan is needed.
“I’m just really disappointed,” Brinnon resident Bud Schindler said. “I’m devastated.
“I didn’t think it would be possible that they would do this with the amount of backing we had from everybody.”
Schindler, who worked with the Quilcene-Brinnon Chamber of Commerce to back the project, said the group would once again step up its support of the rebuilding.
