BRINNON — A veteran Olympic Peninsula educator has been named Brinnon School District superintendent.
The School Board voted unanimously this week to name Dele Gunnerson part-time superintendent, the first at the kindergarten-through-eighth grade school in six years.
Gunnerson, who lives eight miles south of Brinnon at Beacon Point in Mason County, was elected from a list of 10 applicants, said School Board President Gloria Allingham.
“We’re absolutely ecstatic to have him,” said Allingham. “He’s had a broad background in education, and he’s a wonderful man.
Gunnerson, 65, was principal of Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor for 18 years and principal of the Treatment Center School at the Washington State Women’s Prison for four years.
His early career in education included teaching high school-level math and science coached varsity football at Peninsula High School.
Most recently, Gunnerson was assistant executive director of Washington State Interscholastic Activities Association.
Allingham said he will begin his superintendent duties July 1 and will work 60 days a year at a salary of $21,000.
“I’m just delighted to have the opportunity to work with kids,” said Gunnerson.
“My first job is to take the opportunity to meet everybody and clarify the goals of the School Board.”
