BRINNON — For the first time ever, the volunteers of Jefferson County Fire District No. 4 in Brinnon are getting new firefighting gear.
The funds come from a $168,405 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Ten percent of those funds were matched with district funds.
The yellow coats, pants, helmets and boots feature the latest in protective materials.
Money has also been allocated for new air tanks and breathing equipment, radios, pagers and a training program.
The benefit for residents of the district, which covers 132 square miles from Mount Walker to Mason County, is the promise of better responses with more confident firefighters. Chief Jim Wadkins said Thursday.
Equipment currently being used by the fire department is mostly second and third generation equipment handed down from other departments.
