BRIEFLY: Drunken man linked to burglaries

QUILCENE — Steven Wayne Gray, 46, of Shelton, was hospitalized after law enforcement officers found him unconscious on a beach off Linger Longer Road just after noon on Saturday, authorities said Monday.

Gray, who was reportedly intoxicated, was transported to Jefferson Healthcare hospital in Port Townsend for treatment, then ended up spending the night in Jefferson County jail.

A sheriff’s deputy investigating the surrounding area found that a home along Linger Longer Road had been burglarized.

The items missing were the same items Gray was in possession of when he was found laying on the beach, a Sheriff’s Office statement said.

Gray was arrested in 2006 for burglarizing multiple residences in Brinnon and Port Townsend.

Bridge forum

PORT HADLOCK — A community forum focused on the Hood Canal Bridge closure will be held at the Jefferson County Public Library, 620 Cedar Ave., at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 29.

Participants will receive information from representatives of the state Department of Transportation and Jefferson Transit.

“There have been a number of questions about the changes and our intent is to provide answers during this forum,” said Meredith Wagner of the library.

“The forum will help people get ready for the closure.

“If people know their transportation options they can plan ahead.”

Free beer, wine

OLYMPIA — The Legislature has passed a bill that would allow wedding boutiques and art galleries to serve free beer and wine.

The Senate, on a 45-3 vote Monday, concurred with changes made in the House. The measure now goes to Gov. Chris Gregoire.

Under the bill, wedding boutiques and art galleries can offer one free glass of wine or beer to customers who are at least 21.

The drink must be consumed on the premises, and boutiques and art galleries can’t advertise the complimentary wine or beer.

Puppy mill bill

OLYMPIA — The state Legislature has approved a measure cracking down on dog breeders who operate puppy mills.

Under the bill, dog breeders and owners would be barred from owning more than 50 dogs older than 6 months that are not neutered or spayed.

Anyone who has more than 10 unaltered dogs that spend most of their time in pens must house the dogs in clean and dry conditions. Dogs would have to be provided with food, water and exercise.

Retail pet stores, veterinary facilities, boarding facilities and some others would be exempt.

The Senate, on a 43-4 vote Monday, sent the measure to Gov. Chris Gregoire for final approval.
