SEQUIM — Fresh off two straight state tournament appearances, the Sequim boys soccer team started its season off on the right foot Saturday.
Getting goals from three different scorers in the first half, the Wolves dropped rival Port Angeles 3-0 in both team’s first game of the spring.
Walyan Lam, Nick Camporini and Saul Flores each netted goals for the Wolves, who avenged last year’s 1-0 loss to the Riders.
“They did really well,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said. “We were missing at least two starters who didn’t have enough practices yet, so I had a couple of subs in and they played really well.”
Featuring a nearly all new back line, the Wolves kept the Port Angeles offense at bay throughout the nonleague affair.
Originally scheduled to be played in Port Angeles, the game was moved to Sequim after Civic Field was deemed unplayable.
“We just needed to get out and play a real game,” said Port Angeles coach Chris Saari.
“It was kind of some sloppy defending on our part and they capitalized pretty well [in the first half].
“We settled down in the second half and played a little bit better.”
Saari named Max Bukovnik the Riders’ defensive player of the game, and Hayden McCartney the top transition player.
Sequim (1-0-0 overall) hosts Chimacum on Tuesday in a nonleague affair.
Port Angeles (0-1-0) travels to North Kitsap on the same day.

PORT TOWNSEND — A short-handed Redskins team managed to earn a tie in its first game of the season against the Wolves on Saturday.
Redskin Mitiku Little tied the game up in the 29th minute on an assist from Czech exchange student Vojtec Krempek, and neither team scored again.
“We played well, especially our passing game was really good,” said Redskins coach Patrick Kane, who was missing a few starters because they hadn’t had enough practices.
“We didn’t always go for the long ball like we have in the past. We played the ball short and on the ground.
“Luke Noeldechen played defense very well. Louis Gitelman and Dylan Holbrook also played very well in the middle.”
Port Townsend (0-0-1) next hosts Sequim on Thursday in a nonleague game.
