Boy airlifted to Seattle after being hit by truck

Unidentified youth still undergoing treatment as of Wednesday

PORT ANGELES – A 15-year-old boy suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after his bicycle was struck by a pickup truck on Lauridsen Boulevard at Francis Street at 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The boy was not identified because of his age, said Deputy Chief Jason Viada of the Port Angeles Police Department on Wednesday. Harborview personnel had told police early Wednesday afternoon that the boy was continuing treatment at the hospital, Viada said.

The preliminary investigation shows that the boy, who was not wearing a helmet, was riding north from the top of Francis Street down a hill and was not able to stop at the stop sign on Lauridsen Boulevard, Viada said in a press release.

When the bicyclist began crossing Lauridsen, he was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by a Sequim resident.

Viada said that, although investigation continues, preliminary findings are that the truck driver broke no laws.

“The best way to describe this is a terrible accident,” Viada said.

The seriously injured boy was aided by bystanders and medical personnel until an ambulance could take him to Olympic Medical Center to be flown to Harborview.

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Port Angeles Police Department in the ongoing investigation.
