Book discussion groups offered at Port Angeles Library starting Tuesday

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Library hosts three free monthly book discussion groups for adults.

This year, groups meeting at the library at 2210 S. Peabody St. will explore books spanning such genres as contemporary and historical fiction, biography, classics, science and history.

Each book discussion group is facilitated by a library volunteer and supported by the Port Angeles Friends of the Library.

To participate, read the book and attend the discussion. No reservations are needed, and drop-ins are welcome.

PALS

The Port Angeles Literary Society, or PALS, meets at 6:30 p.m. the last Wednesday of every month.

This group reads a wide variety of contemporary and award-winning fiction, nonfiction, poetry, classics and graphic novels.

Upcoming selections are The Bonesetter’s Daughter by Amy Tan this month, The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History by Elizabeth Kolbert in February and Sometimes A Great Notion by Ken Kesey in March.

2nd Tuesday

The 2nd Tuesday Book Discussion Group meets at 11 a.m. the second Tuesday of each month.

This group reads a mix of contemporary and historical fiction, classics and nonfiction.

Upcoming selections include The Samurai’s Garden by Gail Tsukiyama this month, Breakfast With Buddha by Roland Merullo in February and Quiet by Susan Cain in March.

Some of the most enduring films have been inspired by great literature.

Books and movies

Page2Screen, a book-to-film discussion group, explores themes and issues in classic and contemporary books, memoirs, medicine and history, as well as the movies inspired by them.

Page2Screen meets at 6:30 p.m. the last Tuesday of each month, with an optional film screening prior to the meeting.

Upcoming selections for this group include The Help by Kathryn Stockett this month, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak in February and Being Mortal by Atul Gawande in March.

A limited number of copies of each book is be available at the library the month prior to each meeting. Ask library staff members for such alternative formats as large print, book on CD or downloadable print or audio.
