PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles apartment building was evacuated for several hours Wednesday as State Patrol bomb squad members worked to remove an incendiary device that was found near the building.
A resident who found the suspicious item outside the building in the 600 block of South Chase Street called police around noon, said Port Angeles Police Detective Kevin Spencer.
He said the device seemed to have a fuse coming out the top of a bag. The decision was made to cordon off the building and evacuate it.
Bomb squad officers X-rayed the device and neutralized it at a safe location, said Trooper Russ Winger, spokesman for the State Patrol.
“The device was a soda bottle filled with a fuel-soaked material” and also contained fireworks to set it off, he said.
Residents were allowed to return to their apartments at about 3:30 p.m.
Spencer said no individual appeared to have been targeted at the building.
