PORT ANGELES — Repair was underway Friday on a 12-inch water main that broke early in the morning.
Some 350 homes on Race Street to Alder Street and Second Street to Eighth Street were left without water.
Repair is expected to be completed at about 6 p.m. Friday. Water service will be restored but residents are advised to use boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking, cooking, making ice and brushing teeth until test results of water samples are received.
City officials expect the results to arrive on Monday.
After the repair, the water main will be disinfected and flushed, and city officials will take water samples to ensure safety. Once a satisfactory result is received, the precautionary boil water notice will be lifted.
Impacted homes are being notified by door hangers, the city announced, and a satisfactory test results will be reported in the same manner.
To kill bacteria and other organisms that may have been introduced into the water, bring water to a rolling boil for one minute before letting it cool.
Tap water is safe for showering, bathing, and for other household uses including washing dishes in the dishwasher as long as the heat/sanitizing cycle and commercial dish washing detergent are used.
Those who get brown water are advised to flush their water lines by running the water in a bathtub or faucet until the water runs clear.
