Port Angeles firefighters prepare to extinguish a fire aboard the fishing vessel Orca

Boat damaged in Port Angeles fire

PORT ANGELES — A fishing vessel was damaged in a fire at the Port Angeles Boat Haven.

The Port Angeles Fire Department extinguished the blaze aboard the 50-foot Orca at about 2:40 p.m. Friday.

“There was damage done to the side of the boat through the galley area,” Fire Capt. Duke Moroz said.

“At this point in time, it’s under investigation, but we believe it was possibly an electrical short.”

No one was on board when the fire broke out. Firefighters did not know who owns the boat.

The wooden vessel is based in Port Angeles.

Moroz estimated that the fire caused about $15,000 in damage to the boat and an additional $7,500 in lost contents.

Damage to the hull was above the waterline.

The Fire Department responded with two units and five firefighters. They were joined by six others on a general alarm.

Moroz said the firefighters had “really good support” from the Port of Port Angeles, which moved vessels out of the way and assisted from shore.

“They were very helpful,” Moroz said.
