DISCOVERY BAY — A fire destroyed a vacant home at Discovery Bay in the early morning hours Sunday.
Firefighters arrived at the home on the 4300 block of South Discovery Road about 1:30 a.m. and fought the blaze until about 6 a.m. The final truck left the scene at 8:30 a.m.
There were no injuries, and rain helped to offset 25-mile-per-hour winds that blew as firefighters worked to keep flames from spreading to nearby houses.
The home is owned by Karl Jacobsen, who lives a few houses away and was planning to remodel it.
The man’s parents had owned the house many years before, and he had memories of visiting there and was planning on renovating it, said Bill Beezley, spokesman for East Jefferson Fire-Rescue, in a news release.
No one was living there at the time of fire.
The house is about 40 feet from the edge of a high-bank waterfront cliff, and by the time firefighters arrived, it was fully engulfed, the news release said.
The high winds exacerbated the conditions and complicated efforts to tame the flames.
Embers did fall onto a neighboring home but were quickly put out with fire hoses, the news release said.
Three engines from East Jefferson Fire-Rescue responded.
Three water tenders were also called in because the nearest fire hydrant is about a quarter mile away, the news release said.
An engine from Indian Island also assisted.
The fire did not appear suspicious, but the cause is under investigation.
