Black Diamond Road closed on west side of Port Angeles after 6 cars slide to side

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Sheriff’s Office and the Port Angeles Police Department closed Black Diamond Road at the western city limits at 5 p.m. Sunday due to icy conditions on the road, which resulted in six cars sliding off the road near Fors Road.

Only residents of the 1000 block will be allowed access until the road is cleared, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The six vehicles slid off the road separately, including a pickup truck that was nearly on its side in a ditch.

Deputies slid across the road as they attempted to put chains on their own vehicles.

They were unable to get their patrol cars beyond the first car in the long line of stranded motorists without the chains.

Michelle Farmer, a resident who ended up with several cars in her yard, said the road had been difficult all day.

“It’s looking scary. An ambulance that came up almost slid off. Even emergency vehicles struggle through here” Farmer said.

Earlier in the day, a car was abandoned at the corner of the road after a tow truck was unable to get enough traction to get it out of the 5 inches of snow on the side of the road, she said.
