Black Ball Ferry Line purchases Victoria Express business operations

PORT ANGELES — Black Ball Ferry Line, which operates the MV Coho between Port Angeles and Victoria, is purchasing the business operations of the Victoria Express from Victoria Rapid Transit, the companies announced today.

Terms of the sale were not released.

“The timing of this acquisition is beneficial for both our companies,” Black Ball Ferry Line President Ryan Burles in a prepared statement.

“We look forward to welcoming Victoria Express customers on board the Coho to experience our great service and amenities during their trip between Victoria and Port Angeles.”

Following its winter break, the principals of Victoria Rapid Transit, Inc. plan to launch a new Explorer Series of tours, based in Port Angeles.

The Victoria Express will not resume scheduled May to October service between Port Angeles and Victoria. The foot-ferry service is now on its winter break.

The Explorer Series will be offered under Victoria Rapid Transit’s new name, Expeditions NW.

“The Explorer Series sailings will present opportunities to explore the ecological and cultural wonders of our region, an area that is significantly under-recognized for its amazing beauty and opportunities,” said Jack Harmon, president of Victoria Rapid Transit, Inc.

The Harmon family formed Victoria Rapid Transit in 1990, and over the last two decades grew the ferry business to include seasonal service to Victoria, Friday Harbor on San Juan Island and Port Angeles. It has also offered private charters.

In addition to its foot-ferry, Harmon’s company also includes water taxis in Port Angeles and in other ports.

Black Ball Ferry Line provides year-round car and walk-on ferry service between Port Angeles, and downtown Victoria, with up to eight sailings daily during the summer season.
