Bike, van collide; boy hospitalized at Olympic Medical Center

PORT ANGELES — A 12-year-old boy remained at Olympic Medical Center Wednesday after the bicycle he was riding collided with a van at in the intersection of Eight Street and A Street in Port Angeles late Tuesday.

Port Angeles police said the boy’s injuries were serious but did not appear to be life-threatening. Police would not identify the boy, so his listed condition at OMC was not available.

Sgt. Glenn Roggenbuck said he lives in Clallam County.

Roggenbuck said the boy was riding eastbound on Eighth Street when the wreck occurred.

“He was struck by a van turning southbound onto A Street from west on Eighth,” Roggenbuck said.

The crash was reported at 8:36 p.m.

“The investigation is still ongoing,” Roggenbuck said.

“We’re still trying to find out who’s at fault.”

Police identified the driver as Mary Igo, 56, of Port Angeles.

Roggenbuck said the boy was taken to OMC with serious injuries and remained there Wednesday.

“He’s going to make it,” Roggenbuck said. “It did not appear to be life-threatening.”

Jenna Colley, a witness, said the boy was lying on the ground with what appeared to be a “badly broken” left leg.

Colley said the driver of the van came to the boy’s aid. She held his head, spoke with him and maintained eye contact until medics arrived a short time later, Colley said.

“She didn’t want to leave his side,” Colley said.

Neighbors said the injured boy was riding in a group with two other young boys, one of whom crossed the west Eighth Street bridge immediately after the crash to get help. One neighbor said a similar wreck had occurred at the same intersection, Colley said.

“It was very dark,” Colley said. “I don’t think the driver saw him.”

Colley said the injured boy was wearing dark clothing.

“I could hardly sleep last night,” Colley said.

The eastbound lane of West Eighth was closed between A and B streets until about 1 a.m., police said.
