Bike to Everywhere Parade, events set Saturday in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — A two-hour parade and bicycle events with an emphasis on safety will be held on the waterfront Saturday afternoon.

Called the B2E — Bike to Everywhere — Parade, the 1 p.m. pedal procession will pass along the city’s new esplanade on Oak Street and Railroad Avenue.

Organizer George Bergner, director of the group Port Angeles Likes Bikes, said the event is open to all riders — especially children — on all types of pedal-powered machines: road, trail, downhill, BMX, tandem, recumbent, trike, training wheel-equipped, electric e-bike and unicycle.

“Please, no motorized bikes of any kind other than e-bikes,” Bergner said.

Teams of “helmet technicians” from local bicycle shops will demonstrate, adjust and fit helmets.

All children who attend the helmet demonstration corral will earn a children’s bicycle license inserted in a Port Angeles Parks and Recreation Department lanyard.

A member of the City Council will present each qualifying child with a license lanyard, Bergner said.

What participants get

All parade participants Saturday will receive a wristband commemorating the Port Angeles B2E.

Special prizes will be awarded for bicycles “that are creatively decorated and are still safety-maneuverable,” he added.

Other prizes will be awarded for best outfit, best group and other categories.

The prizes will be announced by parade announcer Andrew May, North Olympic Peninsula horticulturist and Peninsula Daily News garden columnist, at the parade reviewing stand at Barhop Brewing, 124 W. Railroad Ave.

Also on hand at B2E will be a Clallam Transit bus equipped with bicycle racks for demonstrations on how to load bikes on buses.

Participating bicyclists and groups are asked to assemble for the parade at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Front Street waterfront lot across from Family Medicine, 240 W. Front St., west of Oak Street.

A large Port Angeles firetruck will mark the site, Bergner said.

He said B2E is sponsored by the nonprofit Port Angeles Likes Bikes and has been made financially possible by community businesses and individuals and endorsed by the City Council and Port Angeles School District Board of Directors.

Bergner hopes the B2E will become an annual event.
