Big Brinnon resort zoning decision expected Monday

PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County commissioners are expected to make a decision Monday on a highly scrutinized proposal to develop a 251-acre Brinnon-Pleasant Harbor resort and golf course.

The meeting will begin at 5 p.m. in the Superior Court room, third floor at the county courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St.

Calgary, Alberta-based Statesman Group of Companies and Black Point Properties propose a $300 million investment south of Brinnon on Hood Canal.

The three county commissioners, who will conduct final deliberations, are charged with making a decision on the master-planned development to allow or not to allow the area to be zoned for a resort.

The site is now zoned rural residential.

“We must make sure we have done enough work on the front end so this can survive an appeal,” county Commissioner David Sullivan, D-Cape George, said after the commissioners’ deliberations last Monday.

“It will cost the county a lot of money otherwise [in court fees] and I don’t want to be in that position.”

If commissioners approve the zoning change, Statesman then would have to apply for permits, a process that could begin this summer.

If the master-planned development is approved, along with nine other comprehensive plan amendments, then the commissioners would consider formal approval in its consent agenda Jan. 22, which then opens a 60-day appeal period that is publicly advertised beforehand.
