PORT ANGELES — Betsy Reed Schultz, founder of the Captain Joseph House, suffered a minor stroke on Friday and is recovering “day by day,” said Kathy Charlton, a board member for the foundation that supports the endeavor.
Schultz was in Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles on Tuesday, said Charlton, the co-owner of Olympic Cellars winery who is vice president of the Captain Joseph House Foundation board.
The stroke “has impacted her speech and memory,” Charlton said, “but she’s doing better and better each day.
“Her words are coming back,” Charlton added.
According to Charlton, Schultz has said: “I’m not sick. I’ve just had a little stroke, and I’m going to get better.”
Tests results to help decide the next steps were expected late Tuesday, Charlton said.
Schultz, 63, is converting her former Tudor Inn at 1108 S. Oak St. into a haven — “a home away from home” — for families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
The house is named for her son, Army Capt. Joseph Schultz, a Green Beret who was killed in action in Afghanistan on May 29, 2011.
“We appreciate everything that OMC has done in caregiving, from the time she entered the emergency room to today,” Charlton said.
