Bell tower adorns Main Street ornaments

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Main Street annual Christmas ornaments are on sale and feature a rendition of the Uptown bell tower by local artist Jolene Sunding.

“The bell tower was part of the community photos this year so we just wanted to continue the uptown love,” said Mari Mullen, executive director of the Port Townsend Main Street program.

The ornaments have been a tradition since 1987, and Sunding said she was eager to be a part of the tradition.

“I wanted to do the ornament,” Sunding said. “I love Port Townsend, and I jumped in early on and asked Mari if I could do it.”

Mullen said Main Street asked for a rendition of the bell tower with some snow.

Showcased

“The Port Townsend Main Street promotions committee wanted to showcase the historic bell tower,” Mullen said in a statement. “The structure is believed to be architecturally unique and dates back from 1890.”

Sunding, who has worked as a graphic designer for over 25 years and co-owns Seasons Hair Salon, created a watercolor of the bell tower surrounded by large snowflakes and decorated Christmas trees.

Sunding’s watercolor was approved by the Main Street promotions committee and the 2017 ornaments went into production.

The ornaments were ordered through the PT Shirt Co. and are on sale for $12 each at a number of businesses around Port Townsend.

Ornaments can be purchased at Abracadabra, 936 Water St.; The Bishop Victorian Hotel, 714 Washington St.; Conservatory Coastal Home, 639 Water St.; Don Tiller Studio, 1017 Water St.; Elevated Ice Cream & Candy Co., 627 Water St.; First Federal, 1321 W. Sims Way; Glow Natural Skin Care, 244 Monroe St.; The Green Eyeshade, 720 Water St.; Jefferson Museum of Art & History, 540 Water St.; PT Shirt Co., 940 Water St.; Safeway, 442 W. Sims Way; Seasons Hair Salon, 914 Washington St., Suite 6; and Quimper Mercantile Co., 1121 Water St.

The ornaments will be available only while supplies last and so far have been selling well, according to Sunding, who said she’s already sold 15 ornaments out of her hair salon.

Proceeds from the ornaments help fund Port Townsend Main Street, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, but these will specifically go toward this year’s holiday events, according to Mullen.

A full list of holiday activities can be found on the Main Street website at www.ptmainstreet.org.
