Ballots for primary elections in Port Angeles, Jefferson County in mail today

Voters in Port Angeles and some of East Jefferson County should check the mail for their primary election ballots over the next few days.

Ballots must be postmarked or returned to county courthouses by Aug. 18 to be counted.

The primary ballots for the position 2 seat on the Port Angeles City Council will be mailed today, along with the ballots for districts 2 and 3 on the Port of Port Townsend commission and Brinnon fire levy.

Since those are the only primary elections on the North Olympic Peninsula, only voters residing within the boundaries of the city of Port Angeles, the Brinnon-based Jefferson County Fire District No. 4, and districts 2 and 3 of the port will receive ballots.

Clallam County Auditor Patty Rosand said 11,003 ballots will be mailed today.

Jefferson County Auditor Donna Eldridge said her office will mail a total of 14,718 ballots.

They should reach mailboxes within the next couple days, the auditors said.

“If you don’t have it by Monday, give us a call,” Rosand said.

The election will be certified Sept. 2.

Contests

Four people — Rick Burton, Edna Petersen, Peter Ripley and Max Mania — are running for position 2 on the Port Angeles City Council.

For the district 2 position on the Port of Port Townsend commission, incumbent Dave Thompson is challenged by Bob Schuessler and David Whipple.

Incumbent Herb Beck, commissioner for port district 3, is challenged by Douglas Breithaupt and Leif Erickson.

The two who get the most votes in each race in the primary will face off in the general election.

Ballots for the Nov. 3 general election will be mailed Oct. 14.

The levy proposed by Jefferson County Fire District No. 4 is for 50 cents per $1,000 assessed property value to pay for emergency medical services.

Residents registering to vote in the state for the first time have until Aug. 10 to register at the county courthouses to participate in the primary elections.

The deadline for voters registered elsewhere in the state, who want to change their registrations to another county, has passed.

Peninsula Daily News voter guides for the primary elections will be provided in Friday/Saturday editions that are delivered to Port Angeles and Jefferson County.
