PORT ANGELES — The Chinook Motel, which the city of Port Angeles has declared is “unfit for human occupancy,” was once advertised as “the Olympics’ finest for luxurious living away from home.”
That undated claim to fame is documented in a 1956 book, Port Angeles.
The book consists of advertisements for local businesses. The ads are not dated.
The motel’s advertisement in the book also says that the motel, built in 1948, was recommended by Duncan Hines and approved by AAA.
“It must have been quite the place at one point,” said Kathy Monds, Clallam County Historical Society executive director, who showed the book to the Peninsula Daily News.
The advertisement also claims that the motel’s “55 beautifully appointed rooms” had everything a traveler could want and need.”
“We have everything for your convenience,” it says.
“We advise reservations.”
