PORT ANGELES – Port Angeles police and the Clallam County Humane Society seized 31 cats and found at least three more dead in a single-wide mobile home Wednesday.
An arrest warrant was served for Julie Yu, 52, who lives at the Welcome Inn RV Park, 1215 W. Highway 101, Space 40, Port Angeles.
The mobile home, which is between 750 square feet and 900 square feet, was home for up to 75 cats at one point, said Cpl. Barb McFall of the Port Angeles Police Department.
The cats were taken to the Clallam County Humane Society shelter.
Yu – whose name was confirmed by the city’s building inspector, Jim Lierly, also involved in the investigation – was not taken into custody Wednesday.
She was at home when officers arrived but left quickly after.
Police left a copy of the arrest warrant at Yu’s home, which she owns while renting the space it sits on, and said they will follow up on it today.
“At that time, we only had two officers present, and if we had tried to arrest her, it would have taken all of us away,” McFall said.
“Our focus was really on the cats and getting them out of there.”
