Author, consultant to present tribute to King

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College will offer a special salute to Martin Luther King Jr. on Thursday, Jan. 12, with a special commemorative program by author, educator, coach and consultant Gloria Burgess.

The program, which is free to the public, will begin at 12:35 p.m. in the college’s Little Theater on the Port Angeles campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

King, civil rights leader, galvanized the nation with his “I Have a Dream” speech at the age of 34.

At the age of 35, in 1964, he won the Nobel Peace Prize.

He was shot to death four years later in Memphis, Tenn.

His birthday, Jan. 15, will be remembered with a federal holiday Monday, Jan. 16.

Burgess is an award-winning poet, director and performing artist.

She is also founder and principal of Jazz Inc., an executive coaching and consulting firm.

The author of several books, Burgess has written Legacy Living and Dare to Wear Your Soul on the Outside, as well as three books of poetry, including Journey of the Rose and The Open Door.

She has also written an inspirational picture book for children of all ages about her father’s life-changing relationship with author William Faulkner, and she is currently at work on a new book series for young people based on the themes in Legacy Living and Dare to Wear Your Soul on the Outside.

She holds a doctorate in performance studies and a Master of Business Administration in organizational behavior and information systems from the University of Southern California.

She also has an master’s in applied behavioral science from the Leadership Institute at Bastyr University and a master’s in speech communication and theater from the University of Michigan.
