Attorney general to speak in Port Townsend at noon Tuesday

Bob Ferguson prepared to talk Tuesday

PORT TOWNSEND — State Attorney General Bob Ferguson will speak in Port Townsend this week.

Ferguson, a potential Democratic candidate for governor according to multiple media reports, will address the Port Townsend and Jefferson County Rotary clubs at noon Tuesday at the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St.

The event is free and open to the public, but seating will be limited to about 200, said Jim Maupin, who works with the programs committee for the Port Townsend Rotary Club.

He expects between 100 and 125 people to attend.

Maupin said he contacted Ferguson’s office about two years ago, when Ferguson challenged and helped to stop President Donald Trump’s executive order that prevented Muslims from entering the United States in 2017, now known as the “travel ban.”

“He’s obviously smart, and he’s a decent human being,” Maupin said of Ferguson.

Maupin joined Rotary in 1991 and said he couldn’t remember any other state official speaking at a Rotary club meeting.

Ferguson will speak at 12:15 p.m. for about 45 minutes and may take questions, Maupin said.

“I just said, ‘Tell the truth with what you’re doing. Don’t worry about being political. We’re in political times,’ ” Maupin said. “Not everybody’s going to agree with you. We want to hear what you’re doing.”

The Port Townsend Rotary Club has about 50 members. An average crowd is 35, Maupin said.

He’s invited lawyers from both Jefferson and Clallam counties as well as the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Port Townsend Police Department.
