PORT ANGELES — Olympic National Park released attendance figures last week:
■ August 2014: 1,072,378
■ August 2013: 855,663
■ Difference: 25.3 percent
■ Year-to-date 2014: 2,949,254
■ Year-to-date 2013: 2,383,223
■ Difference: 23.8 percent
A large increase in visits to the Elwha District of the national park, likely driven by good weather and the dam removal project, helped Olympic to have one of its best August count’s ever.
The closest month, based on available records, was August 2004 when there were 940,156 recreational visits.
It is possible the park might break its annual record of 3,846,709 visits in 1997.
