PORT ANGELES — Black singe marks at the bottom of a door indicate where an arsonist attempted to burn down a building at the State Patrol weigh station east of Port Angeles on Friday morning, authorities said.
Two Border Patrol agents saw the small fire while driving on U.S. Highway 101 at about 1:45 a.m. and extinguished the flames, said Chief Criminal Deputy Ron Cameron with the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.
Cameron said an accelerant, likely gasoline, was splashed on the door.
The Sheriff’s Office is investigating. Deputies have no leads, Cameron said Friday.
State Patrol Sgt. Brett Yacklin of the Port Angeles detachment said the small building, which troopers use to operates the scales, was not damaged beyond the singe marks.
“The building is made of brick and steel, so it’s not going to burn down,” he said.
Yacklin said the detachment has not received threats or any indication as to why someone would want to set fire to the building.
