ARE WE BEST YET? KING-TV’s clickfest on Best of Western Washington includes scores of Peninsula entries

SEATTLE — We can bark with the big dogs and wag a little at ’em, too.

In KING-TV’S “Best Everything of Western Washington,” more than 130 North Olympic Peninsula places, people, businesses and events are among the 21,000-plus nominees in 221 categories.

Sound pretty slim? Consider that late last week, The Cedars at Dungeness led 53 golf courses and That Takes the Cake of Sequim is No. 1 in Best Wedding Cakes and in the top 10 in two other categories in balloting at http://best.king5.com and that 7 Cedars Casino held No. 2 among 26.

Online voting ends Oct. 23. Winners will be announced Nov. 20.

Other top 10 contenders and their categories, as they were rated Friday, included:

■ Nourish of Sequim, No. 6 for Best Gluten-Free Menu.

■ That Takes the Cake of Sequim, No. 7 for Best Desserts.

■ That Takes the Cake of Sequim, No. 8 for Best Cupcakes.

■ Sequim’s Oak Table restaurant, No. 8 for Best Brunch.

■ Port Scandalous Roller Derby, No. 8 for Best Roller Derby Team.

■ Wind Rose Cellars of Sequim, No. 9 for Best Winery.

■ C’est Si Bon of Port Angeles, No. 9 for Best French Food.

■ Mount Townsend Creamery in Port Townsend, No. 9 for Best Cheese Shop.

■ Brandon Cray of Chimacum, a Seattle University basketball player, No. 10 for Best College Athlete.

According to the station’s website, more than 160,000 people had cast more than 400,000 votes.

Participants can vote for multiple nominees in each category.

Some categories were dominated by certain regions. When the Big One hits Woodinville, for instance, that winery-laden burg will be waist-deep in merlot.

Still, at last three Peninsula wineries made the list: Olympic Cellars Winery, Port Angeles; Harbinger Winery of Port Angeles; and FairWinds Winery of Port Townsend.

We’re also proud of our art galleries. The Blue Hole Gallery, Sequim; the Red Raven, Port Townsend; Ancestral Spirits, Port Townsend; Gallery 9, Port Townsend, The Landing, Port Angeles; LARC Gallery, Sequim; Eagle Tree, Port Ludlow; and Artisans on Taylor, Port Townsend, all were among those nominated.

Two groups from Port Townsend made the list for Best Local Band: Freddy Pink and the Delta Rays.

Next Door Gastropub, Port Angeles, drew nominations in three categories: Best Trendy Bar, Best Cocktails and Best Burger.

Other Best Burger candidates include Fat Smitty’s of Port Townsend, Sully’s Drive-In of Forks, the Chimacum Cafe and Colonel Hudson’s Famous Kitchen, Port Angeles.

As for the other categories, most drew but one Peninsula nomination. Others — notably Best Pizza, Bike Shop, Arts and Crafts Store, Gift Shop, Coffee Shop and several wedding-related categories — were represented by multiple businesses.

An informal survey of other Peninsula nominees follows. It does not include franchise outlets, businesses with addresses listed as “see world map” or businesses listing “multiple outlets.”

It may not be a complete list, and some of the locations have closed either temporarily or permanently.
