Applicants for fire board vacancy sought

PORT TOWNSEND — East Jefferson Fire-Rescue is soliciting applications from people who are interested in serving as fire commissioner to fill the expired term of Jess Bondurant Jr.

Bondurant was first elected Jefferson County Fire District No. 1 commissioner in November 1991 and was running unopposed for a fourth term when he died Sept. 6 of complications after heart surgery. He was 70.

Interested residents are asked to send a letter of interest, including a short biography, to the board.

Letters must be received at the District Administrative Office, 40 Seton Road, Suite A, Port Townsend, by Oct. 28.

An appointment by the remaining two board members could be made at the scheduled board meeting Nov. 15, according to district secretary Lonibeth Harbison.

According to the job notice, which is due for publication in area newspapers, it is not necessary to have a background in emergency services.

“Most im-portant is a desire to serve your community by working together with an elected body to oversee policy matters and district finances,” the notice states.

Those interested in the position must be a registered voter who resides within the boundaries of East Jefferson Fire-Rescue, which includes Chimacum, Marrowstone Island and Port Hadlock.

A detailed map of the district is available from the fire district’s office.

The East Jefferson Fire-Rescue Board of Commissioners is composed of three elected fire commissioners who have a statutory obligation to manage the affairs of the district and establish all district policies.

Each fire commissioner is elected to a six-year term.

Bondurant, who was not in ill health, did not want to serve another term but declared his candidacy on the last day of filing because no other candidate had come forward, said East Jefferson Fire-Rescue spokesman Bill Beezley.

The appointment will be made for a commissioner to serve until the end of 2013.

An election to fill the remainder of the term, until the end of 2017, will be held in November 2013.

The day-to-day operations of the district are managed by Fire Chief Gordon Pomeroy.

The three-member board, which also includes Rich Stapf and Zane Wyll, also functions as part of a joint oversight board that includes three members of the Port Townsend City Council.

Those with questions about the commissioner position should phone Harbison at 360-385-2626.
